Jean Grey was a founding member of the X-Men under the name of Marvel Girl. Possessing telepathy and telekinesis, Jean fought alongside her teammates until an ill-fated mission in space took a turn for the worst. Injured and knowing they would all die, Jean reached out to anything that would heed her prayers, coming into contact with the Phoenix Force, the sum of life in the universe. After this moment, Jean and the Phoenix were nearly inseparable, despite cloning, death, and alternate versions of the future.
